Eastchurch the Birthplace of the FAA



On Friday 8th October 2010 the first of what is hoped to be an annual event took place at Eastchurch. In the main the event was organised by Eastchurch Parish Council and the Public Relations and Heritage 702 RNAS Yeovilton under the auspices of the Military Aviation Authority
There was a short memorial Service led by the Parish Priest Father Barry Birch, Reviewing Officer was Commodore Martin Westwood RN and Commander Geoff Bowker RN. There were some six Association Standards both FAAA and RNA lead by FAAA National Standard. Under the control of Area Deputy Parade and Ceremonial Officer S/m Harry Cowell of the Sittingbourne Branch were six FAA Association members. Local dignitaries included the Mayor of Swale and Leader of Eastchurch Parish Council. Local School children were very proud to form a guard of honour for the Dignitaries as they came across from the church Lych Gate. A Short Memorial Service was held at the Pioneer Memorial in Eastchurch culminating in a fly past of a Seahawke from the FAA Memorial Flight. The 2011 service will be held on May 6th. A stained glass window in All Saints' Church, Eastchurch was dedicated to the aviation pioneers Charles Rolls and Cecil Grace, who were both killed in 1910.
